Sauer est Professeur associé en Gestion des opérations et de la chaîne d'approvisionnement à NEOMA BS. Précédemment, il a été professeur associé de Gestion de la chaîne d'approvisionnement et des achats à l'EM Strasbourg Business School (France), professeur adjoint d'ingénierie de gestion à l'Université libre de Bozen-Bolzano (Italie) et titulaire d'un doctorat en gestion de la chaîne d'approvisionnement de l'Université de Kassel (Allemagne). Ses recherches portent sur la durabilité, la digitalisation, la résilience et l'incertitude dans les opérations et les chaînes d'approvisionnement. Il s'intéresse particulièrement aux chaînes d'approvisionnement à plusieurs niveaux et développe la pertinence et la rigueur méthodologique des analyses systématiques de la littérature.
